I have three watches and two of them had dead batteries. Now that it’s short-sleeve weather, my colored watch bands are more easily seen, so I figured it’s time to get new batteries so I don’t make too many fashion faux pas.
In the past I’d run into Target, or when I lived in Ticonderoga, Walmart, to get them changed. Now, I needed to find a non-chain jewelry store in town. I buy all my jewelry at craft shows or in the Museum Center at 5ive Points’ wonderful Museum Store. I work at the museum and we have an incredible selection of one-of-a-kind jewelry from local craftspeople such as Dale Armstrong (my personal favorite). So I don’t frequent jewelry stores nor pay attention to where they are.
So, when it was time to change my batteries, I needed to seek out a non-chain jewelry store. Once the main stay of every downtown, these stores are dwindling rapidly. One of our local jewelers is Coy’s Jewelers, located in the Stuart Park Plaza on Keith Street. I went there since its close to work to have my batteries changed. The store is clean, bright, and had very nice jewelry including a wonderful case of inexpensive, but interesting antique pieces. I had great service that was quick, helpful, and efficient. I wish they had a website to show you, but they don’t.
Another hometown jeweler is Epperson’s. Located on Georgetown Road, Epperson’s is known for their original designs in jewelry. And, like a lot of local businesses, the Eppersons support the community through their charitable contributions. Their business is a member of the Museum Center and they were instrumental in designing many facets of the Museum’s interior when we first opened ten years ago. This is one of the great things about local businesses – they really care about their community.

The Eppersons designed the decorative copper wall in our Lobby which depicts the historic skyline of Cleveland, as well as the River of Time which is seen on the floor.
I’m now able to tell you that it is 10:15 p.m. on three watches thanks to my recent visit to Coy’s.
If any of you have had experiences at Coy’s or Epperson’s and want to write a review please feel free to do so on the blog. Or, if your from out of town and want to tell us about your favorite jewelry store, please let me know about it.
Dan and I will soon be adding a feature to our Unchained in America website that will be a state by state directory of non-chain stores and restaurants. We will need your help to make it comprehensive and helpful! So, watch for our announcement and be ready to help us.
I’ve been going to Wanda’s Jewelry in Stuart for years for my watch bands and batteries. For some reason I’m hard on both. and come to think of it, there are about five watches in my jewelry box that need attention!
