Gourmet dog treats? That’s a little over the top, and I never thought I would buy into the idea. (Of course, I’ve always believed that nothing is too good for our dog, Faith.)
Anyhow, I knew that when I gave up shopping at chain stores, I’d have trouble finding a substitute for PetSmart, PETCO, and Target. (Yes, Target! It sells a braided rawhide bone that Faith loves. And we bought our Greenies there, too.) And the only nonchain pet shot in Cleveland, Tennessee, near where I live, is small and doesn’t carry a large selection of pet supplies for dog and cats.
Bite My Hand
But Lisa and I had heard of a nonchain pet shop on the North Side of Chattanooga, across the Tennessee River, called The Bone Appetit Bakery. It claims to be “The Southeast’s Premier Premiere Pet Botique,” and bills itself as having:
* Gourmet bakery dog treats and cat treats
* Grooming and spa products
* Botique and gift items
So one day we decided to check out this pet shop that bills itself as a bakery that makes gourmet dog treats.
We were blown away.
Cinnamon Rollovers
As soon as we entered the pet shop, we found ourselves facing a case like the ones you see in candy stores that display chocolates. Only this one was chock-full of delicious-looking dog treats and cat treats that looked like cookies and candies. The treats had cute-sounding names, too, such as Bite My Hand, Apple Cinnamon Pupover, Russell Rover BonBons, Chili Puppers, and Betty Cocker Brownies. Prices range from 25 cents to $2.00.
Russell Rover Bon Bons
The owners make the dog treats and cat treats in-house and you can watch them putting frosting on the various goodies. Because dogs can’t eat chocolate, they use carob.
A display of boxes containing small dog treats is by the bakery area. You can fill a small or large bucket with whatever assortment you want. Flavors include BBQ, cheese, bacon, liver, pumpkin, peanut butter, chicken, and beef.
Buddy Biscuits
One interesting item they carry is Buddy Biscuits, which are bake-at-home dog treats and cat treats. They come in bags, with instructions for baking them yourself. (I’m not sure if the bag includes instructions for decorating the treats, too.) I’m sure Lisa and I will try them sometime.
Betty Cocker Brownies
Besides dog gourmet and regular dog treats, the bakery also carries cat treats. We haven’t gotten any treats for our cats. Caesar has a kidney disease and can’t eat much protein. And we don’t think it’s fair to let Princess have treats and not Caesar.
The bakery also carries a full range of pet supplies for dogs and cats, including premium food, toys (including designer toys), collars and leashes, pet care and grooming products, pet beds, bowls, and so on. The focus, though, is on dogs.

Hey, that sounds good…for dogs anyway! I’m going to check out the web site even though I don’t have a pet.
Meg and I went a non-chain fabric store today with a friend. It’s in Waynesville (about 20 min. from us). There were all kinds of fabrics. The prices were high but most of the fabrics we saw you don’t see anywhere else. They are mostly for quilting. I saw some material I’d like to have gotten. Sure glad I didn’t have money!
